There’s not much I enjoy doing more with Big S than sitting down and doing some craft together. He’s a creative kid and loves to get stuck in with the glitter glue and sticky back plastic! We’re lucky enough to have a great arts and craft group running just up the road from us at the Pelican on Portland; Mini Art Cart runs every Tuesday (term time only) from 9.30am-11.30am. Run by Dawn, of “The Amazing Art Cart” fame, Mini Art Cart is a brilliant group for pre-school aged kids.
As a former childminder, Dawn is great with kids of all ages. She has buckets of enthusiasm and makes sure to check in with all the kids around the table, praising and encouraging their efforts. Big S always loves to show her what he’s doing and comes away from every session feeling proud of what he’s made. He always wants to get straight on to Skype to show his grandparents his latest creation!
Each session is a different creation and they are wonderfully varied; recently we’ve made a beautiful Valentine’s day card and a fabulous decorated rucksack! Big S loves the big boxes of bits for decorating with, there’s always so much to choose from and plenty to go around for everyone.
It’s a popular group, but if there isn’t space at the table when you arrive, there’s a back room at the Pelican with toys and a playmat so it’s no bother waiting a short while for a seat. It’s a friendly venue and group; sitting around the big table there’s usually plenty of friendly chat between the grown-ups, which is nice if you’re feeling a bit short on adult conversation.
It’s a drop-in session, so there’s no need to book, which is super handy for us as we like to chop and change our plans instead of sticking to the same groups week in, week out. So if you wake up in a creative mood on a Tuesday, get yourself down to the Pelican and give it a go!
TLDR: Friendly pre-school art group perfect for kids with a creative streak.
